Design a Bay banner!

Cardiff Harbour Authority is turning 25 this year. To celebrate, we’d like primary school-age children to design a poster that sums up what Cardiff Bay means to them.

The 25 winning entries will be displayed along the Barrage Walkway during the summer. Over a million people visit the Barrage every year, so your artwork will be famous! The remaining entries will be shown on our website or social media.

Bay banner instructions – please read carefully before starting your design

You can work alone or with your class. Here are some facts about Cardiff Bay to give you ideas for your design:

  • Big Bay
Cardiff Bay is 220 hectares in size. That’s bigger than 300 football pitches!
  • Water control
The Barrage created a freshwater lake (the Bay), which is topped up by the rivers Taff and Ely.
  • Wonderful wildlife
The Bay is home to many different birds and fish. It’s important to take care of them. Perhaps you’ve been wildlife-spotting at the Wetlands Reserve?
  • Child’s play
The Barrage features a play area, skate park and the Enormous Crocodile, all with beautiful Bay views. Think about the fun things you might have done there with your family and friends.
  • Hard work
Staff work all the time to make sure that the Barrage works properly. They open and close bridges, let boats through, and keep the water levels just right. Too much water can cause floods, and too little water isn’t good for the animals.
  • Cleaning up
Not everyone takes care of our rivers. Staff use special boats to collect rubbish from the rivers and recycle as much as they can. The less rubbish people throw away, the cleaner the Bay will be for wildlife.
  • Water fun
At Cardiff Sailing Centre on the Barrage and Cardiff Rowing Centre at Channel View Leisure Centre, you can try out different watersports.
  • Exciting events
The Bay hosts many events throughout the year, such as the Cardiff Bay Family Fun Park, Cardiff Food & Drink Festival, and the Cardiff Half Marathon.
  • Love learning
The Bay is a great place to learn. Maybe you’ve visited with your school or would like to. You can find out about the history of the area and how we take care of the environment.
