A very warm welcome to Flat Holm’s new warden, Simon Parker!
After working as a Royal Navy helicopter engineer, Simon discovered his passion for conservation while volunteering with wildlife trusts and becoming a Wildlife Trust Ranger.
Since the pandemic, he’s been an engineer for the Red Arrows, but is now embracing this new challenge: “I’ve always been interested in living outside the mainstream. I’ve volunteered on the island twice before and loved the isolation and rawness, I’m fighting against domestication!”
He enjoys climbing, endurance running, wild camping, travel, writing, spoken word poetry and nature. Not only has he hiked from Mexico to Canada, he’s also competed in 24 hour running events, clocking up 110 miles. That would be the equivalent of running the length of Flat Holm 285 and a half times. Better get started…
We’re delighted to have Simon on board and he’s looking forward to the uniqueness of island life: “I’m excited about meeting the wide variety of people who visit and hearing their stories, the change through the seasons, seeing the wildlife come and go, helping people understand the importance of our rare habitats, slowing the pace of life and living more purposefully.”
